The death of discipline

Punishing and Discipline – a rant

A recent study highlights the fact that today’s parents have forgotten that sometimes, you have to be cruel to be kind! One in four parents refuse to discipline their children because they are worried they might upset them.

This survey led This Morning to do a phone-in for parents who wanted advice on disciplining their children.

What followed was controversial, to say the least. Denise, the agony aunt gave some solid advice and the child was at the centre of her responses, which is a pleasure to see. While her advice was maybe not as practical as it could be, I admired her for going against the grain.

However, the onslaught she received on the This Morning Facebook page made me very angry, to say the least.

Tips for dealing with bad behaviour in teenagers

How to get through the Teen Years.

The teenage years have become linked intrinsically to bad behaviour and appalling attitude, and the stereotypical images we see on TV do not help. But are they really that bad?

Well, the answer is yes, they can be and no, not if you don’t allow it.

1. Enough is enough !

First you have to make the decision that is enough is enough, and what you will and will not accept in the house. Many parents fear being strong as they think their teen will shout and be difficult; they just don’t want the conflict. If you want the behaviour and attitude to stop, then you have to step up and be prepared to do what you must. Make a list now of the things that you want to stop.

Family Conflict

untitled

We are experts in family conflict and proud of it. As a practical, down-to-earth girl I want results for you and what I have found, over 10 years of working with families, is that my police background is a real advantage. I can very quickly get to the real point, evaluate the evidence and come up with a solution. I can do that while remaining calm and unfazed. Just what you need when you are feeling as if everything is just too much.

When dealing with family conflict we use restorative justice methods, in fact to date (that we know of) we are the only organisation that has applied these techniques to family conflict. My work on restorative parenting tm, as it has become known, has been held in high regard by the Canadian Restorative Justice Panel and my work was included in their conference in 2008. A high accolade indeed.

The biggest test for parents is not how they parent but how the respond to disorder and unpredictability.

I am passionate about these powerful and challenging techniques that transform not only criminals, but communities and families as well.

What we do goes against the grain, takes courage, faith and work, so it is not for the faint hearted .
